What do you do
when you realize
(suddenly, out of the blue)
that the memories
have faded?
Not gone
(not all of them)
but somehow...
diminished.
The moment
(it comes as a shock)
when you realize
you don't remember
his voice,
her laughter
or
that one important conversation you had.
It kills.
That one family trip
got mixed up with another.
The color of your walls,
the field trips
the places you've been.
They're all blurred.
You can't recall the name of your favorite restaurant,
bar,
shopping mall.
What was your old address again?
Does it matter?
Why do I care?
(no one else does)
A pressure builds up in your chest.
The walls seem to be closing in.
You look around your room.
Desperately trying to memorize this one
(it will change soon enough)
You go through old photographs
(the ones you've seen so many times before)
but they seem like distant dreams.
Like some other life.
With other people.
With another version of you.
(do they ever think of me?)
But the worst
(the one that hurts just a little too much)
is when you can't remember
if you ever even said goodbye.
